Sorry that this is a really image-heavy post, but I wanted you all to have an idea of what ANZAC day is like for Australians. For me at least, it's one of the more important public holidays, commemorating great bravery and sacrifice of every Australian (and New Zealand) soldier. Traditionally there is a dawn service (held at 4:28am, the time at which Australians landed at Gallipoli), and my local area also holds a parade and service. I chatted with ex-prime-minister Kevin Rudd as he lives in our local area, and found that this year's ANZAC day was the one I felt most engaged with. All of the old men wearing their suits and army medals reminded me of my late grandafather, who served as one of the Rats of Tobruk and also as a special paratrooper in the Z-force.
